Words Matter

As some of you know, I am a substitute teacher right now. I interact with hundreds of kids a week. I love it.

However, sometimes… kids can be mean.

I want to share with you some of the things I have overheard over the past couple of years:

“Look at that guy, walking down the hall, high-fiving everyone. I would like to punch him in the face.”

“In 2nd grade, I gave my teacher a black eye. I punched him because I didn’t think he knew what he was talking about and I almost got expelled.”

“Oooo! Did you see that in the locker room? He body slammed him so hard! Any guy that can do a body slam, is good with me!”

“Did you see the new girl? I bet I could get some of that. I will walk right up and… (laughs).”

You may wonder, when you read this, what happened to those kids.

Well, I’m going to be honest with you. I never overheard any of this in the halls of any school where I substitute taught.

I watched words very similar to these come out of our President’s mouth. Full disclosure: I paraphrased because I know many of you would have spotted the quotes right away and my point would be missed.

I am happy to provide you with the exact quotes if you want. I just don’t want to waste space here. Every one of those quotes match what President Trump has said when it comes to meaning. Plus, I can dig up many more of them.

Here is my point: You cannot be surprised by the fact that many high-profile Democrats received pipe bombs this week. You cannot. The leader of the free world believes in violence when things don’t go his way.

The President of the United States wants you to hurt someone who disagrees with him. He has even offered to pay for people’s legal bills if they do it.

Words matter, people. You all know it. Those of you with kids spend most of their first 10 years making sure they are polite and don’t bully other kids. Well, not all parents do that, believe me, I’ve met quite a few who honor bullying because it shows strength…. that is for another blog.

I am focused right now on the fact that no one should be surprised by the pipe bombs sent out this week. No one.

President Trump can denounce the acts of violence this week…. but everyone needs to know… he should be owning some responsibility for it.
